When to Hire a Designer

When to Hire a Designer

I wanted to take some time to share the answer to one of our frequently asked questions! When should you hire a designer? Timing is key in this world of construction and it is important to know the sweet spot with onboarding the stakeholders on your project. That said, there really is only one answer, the earlier the better.

As soon as you are starting to source an architect, you should be vetting a design firm. As the structure starts to take shape, having the design team work in tandem to give feedback and advocate for the interior footprint will help reduce the amount of potential revisions downstream. We get to know you in the same way an architect does, but we approach it through a very different lens. So having that perspective considered upfront, just helps so much more than trying to do it downstream.

The best, most ideal situation is one where we are brought on early and we are allowed a lengthy amount of time to really soak on the project and source the materials that will really help it shine. In order to do this, we need to not feel rushed to pull the easiest products to source. We want to find that one special, unique item that will make each space soar. So having a good amount of upfront preplanning time will help us to truly find the most special selections for your space.

Additionally, the later we are brought in, the harder it is for us to ask for revisions on the jobsite or to source items that would, perhaps, have a longer lead time. Again, the earlier the better friends!

So the question is, how long does it take?

Generally for a new construction home, we are designing 6-8 months BEFORE the dirt is moved and the total process of designing, sourcing, and project administration will take us 12-18 months on a new construction home. Then there is typically a lull where we have little involvement until the end when we do the final installation of furnishings.

For a remodel, the design time tends to be shorter and with the longest period of time being the wait between when the materials arrive and the construction starts.

Hope this helps! Are you ready to start a project this coming year?? Let's do it.
