Kitchen Planning 101

Kitchen Planning 101

So, we get it. Thinking about a Kitchen remodel can be so overwhelming and hard to know where to even begin. We gotchu. Today I am giving you 5 tips on where to start and how to get going!

1) Get real about your budget.

Have the tough conversation with yourself and your partner. Really think about what you can spend. We know you have no idea how much things cost. But, you do have some ceiling to the number you are willing to spend. So spend some time and really think about what your numbers are before moving forward.

2) Assess if the footprint works or if you need a new layout.

This step is critical in knowing how to evaluate costs. If you are simply pulling and replacing items in your space but are not moving lighting or plumbing, it will be significantly less expensive than trying to adjust your layout. Knowing if you need to move things will help inform your design team and builder of what they are signing up for.

3) Start putting together inspo images.

Use Pinterest! Or magazines, or Houzz, or whatever is easiest for you! But, spend some time looking at spaces you are drawn to. This will help give a sense of your aesthetic to your team and make things so much easier.

4) Dust off those plans.

If you have plans, GREAT. If you do not, but your house is newer, call your local building department to see if they have them on file still. Reach out to the previous owner. Check the attic and crawlspaces! Having a set of as-built plans will make things so much easier for your design team to start on the project. Don’t have plans? Don’t fret, any designer you work with should be able to do a site measure and get you started from there.

5) Decide what you want your focal point to be.

Love a patterned tile backsplash? Great, then you probably don’t want a wild veined counter. Love the look of a wild natural stone? Awesome, we will want to keep your backsplash subtle to really allow that to pop. You don’t have to make any selections yourself, but it is helpful to know what selections are the higher priority for you.
